Welcome to March!  We are that much closer to the end of year here at Brookswood, if you can believe it!  Term 3 has begun, Spring Break is fast approaching and course planning is under way.  Please take special note of some of the information regarding course planning in this week’s Bobcat’s Den.

IN (AND OUT) OF THE CLASSROOM

This week all of our Grade 8-11 students attended course planning assemblies, as well as an course fair!  Students learned about different electives and course options.  During the week we focussed on being inclusive of all students wearing our District’s Blue Respect & Diversity shirts. We also recognized PINK SHIRT DAY.  Friday our Leadership students had a bake sale to raise funds for our Conflict-Resolution/Peer Mediation group here at Brookswood. These students are trained to work with their peers to resolve arguments, fights and interpersonal conflicts.

We would also like to congratulate our February PE Students of the Month!

COURSE PLANNING

Students will be asked to do their course planning through MyEdBC this year.  Students should log into their accounts (NOT PARENTS–THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE VIA THE STUDENT ACCOUNT) to complete their course choices.  If students can’t log in, they need to see the office or library to get new log in credentials.

More information can be found here on our website: https://bss.sd35.bc.ca/programs-courses/course-descriptions/

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school for more information.

SCHOOL INFORMATION

Mike Pue appointed District Vice-Principal, Enhanced Student Services (Children in Care)

The District recently recruited for a District Vice-Principal of Enhanced Student Services.  The position will be part of the District’s Learning Support Services Department, and will be the first point of contact, representing the District with Children in Care enrolment, educational advocacy and planning. Brookswood Vice Principal, Mr. Mike Pue, has been appointed to the position effective April 4, 2018.  Mike has a strong understanding of the needs of Children in Care, specifically Aboriginal Children in Care, and has provided strategies of enhanced services for meeting their needs at the school level.  Mike’s district and school-based experience in managing district information, supporting schools in enhancing learning experiences and collaborating with community agencies on behalf of Children in Care within our District make him well suited to the position. We are sad to see Mike leave Brookswood but look forward to working with him in his new assignment.

Replacing Mr. Pue as Vice-Principal at Brookswood Secondary will be Ms. Lisa Ellis.  Ms. Ellis is currently a humanities/physical education/AVID teacher and PE Department Head at Langley Secondary School.  She brings with her a wealth of secondary teaching experience with previous assignments at HD Stafford, Langley Secondary and Walnut Grove Secondary over the course of her 20-plus year career with the Langley School District.  Her strong leadership and teamwork skills will be an excellent addition to the Brookswood administrative team. We look forward to having Ms. Ellis join our team!

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

SPORTS NEWS

BASKETBALL

These past few weeks saw most of our basketball teams complete their season.  Our Junior Boys showed well in the Provincial Tournament, of which Brookswood is a co-host with Mountain Secondary this year.  Our Junior Girls’ capped off a very successful season with a 2 win and 2 loss record at the Provincials this weekend. The Senior Girls’ team also had a very successful provincial championship tournament finishing 5th in BC with a 3 win and 1 loss tournament. Unfortunately, the Senior Boys lost a ‘do or die’ game this week and did not qualify for Provincials. Congratulations to all of our athletes on an excellent season and of course, THANK YOU to all of our coaches for the many hours they put into their teams this season!
