November 19, 2017–News from the Bobcat’s Den

In this edition

Those December dates are getting closer and closer!  November is still here, and we have added yet another amazing week to our BSS memories! We were very busy (as you can see below) with field trips, fundraisers, a celebrity visit, athletics, leadership training and more; however, the real business was in every classroom as we get set to wrap up Term 1!  Students should take advantage of their Flex block to find those classes where they still need to demonstrate learning, as well as find time to touch base with their teachers this week.  We have Collaboration on Tuesday as well, so make note of that earlier dismissal time.  We have also noted a number of fundraisers taking place at Brookswood, and we hope you take a moment to see whether you can help out and perhaps cross off a few names on your Christmas lists…

Almost all of our grade 10 students attended a field trip to the HR Macmillan Space Centre this week, along with Mr. Ocampo, Mrs. Noakes, Ms. Shinkaruk and a few other supervisors.  Students enjoyed an opening First Peoples’ story shared by Mrs. Goldsack, a ROCKET demonstration, a tour of the gallery (where you could touch a REAL piece of the moon!) and a show in the planetarium dome.  Some of our Drama and Film students got to be a part of filming one of Netflix’s hottest shows this past week: Riverdale!  Students in both Drama and Film have the opportunity to learn hands on during the many film and television shows that utilize BSS for filming.  BSS Swim Team also made an appearance at the Provincials this week!  Mrs. Neufeld and Ms. Coulas took a group of students to UBC for Humanitarians in Training, a day-long conference aimed to engage, educate and empower youth interested in humanitarian issues. During the conference Brookswood students did a simulation in International Humanitarian Law, learned about global issues and club leadership through activities and workshops.

Grade 12 parents and students are invited to a very important meeting on the evening of Monday, November 20th in the theatre, beginning at 7:00 pm.

We will be covering important information about graduation and the application process for post secondary institutions.  In addition we will have Madison Guy coming in as a guest speaker.  Madison is a scholarship and bursary specialist who knows exactly how to maximize efforts to get as much FREE money as possible to put towards a post secondary education.  As a former Brookswood grad she is a wealth of relevant information.

DECEMBER 1-MyBlueprint for Grad Transitions is DUE

Cinderella Project:

Any graduating students who may have difficulty purchasing a gown or suit for the graduation banquet should be aware of The Cinderella Project.  Please see Mrs. Faber or Ms. Coulas for more information and to be referred to the program.

Not sure about post-secondary?  Need help with your resume and cover letter?  Are you interested in an apprenticeship or a choice program?  Contact our Careers department!  Ms. Dalgetty and Mrs. Gauthier are ready and willing to help students with their skill development, job applications and more! Email: or or come to the Careers Centre upstairs in the English wing!

There are a number of student groups fundraising this time of year, and all for a good cause! Here are some that are happening now:

Girls Basketball & Save-on-Foods Gift Cards:

The BSS Girls Basketball teams are selling Save-On-Foods gift cards through December 10th, where they get a percentage back for their fundraising efforts. Save-on-Foods gift cards can also be used to purchase the in-store gift cards that Save-on-Foods sells. Some in-store gift cards include Cineplex, Starbucks, iTunes, Winners, PetSmart, The Keg, White Spot, Chapters, Best Buy, Golf Town and Sport Check. There are a few more that you can check out at their gift card kiosk. This is an excellent option for those who don’t normally shop at Save-on-Foods. Think of Christmas shopping! Also, when using the gift cards, you still will be able to redeem and collect Save On More Points when buying your groceries if you have a more rewards card.

Gift Cards are in $25, $50 and $100, you can buy as much as you like.

Please contact to purchase or the office.

Basketball & Purdy’s Christmas Chocolate

BSS Girls Basketball is fundraising with Purdy’s Chocolatier, just in time for Christmas!

Prices are the same as in store, and the Girls Basketball Program receives 25%

If you would like to support the BSS Girls Basketball Program through purchasing some very sweet Christmas gifts for friends, family and yourself, please click on the link below:
