We enjoyed a very busy week here at Brookswood, starting with a post-secondary information fair for grads and ending off with a curriculum implementation day with staff. Other events this week included our renowned Grade 8 Trackmeet and Mental Health Awareness Day, as well as our grad group photo for the yearbook.
GRADE 8 TRACKMEETEach year, our PE department headed up by Ms. Lochbaum, puts on a fantastic all-morning event for our grade 8 students where they learn about “Bobcat Country,” bond as a class and have a ton of fun. We want to thank Mr. Pawar and his PE Leadership students, as well as Mr. Stewart, Mr. Allingham, Mr. Allen, Mrs. Hind and Ms. Shinkaruk for all of their hard work in making this event a huge success! As usual, our Grade 8 students enjoyed every minute of the relays, cheers and dance party. One grade 8 said that it was “So much fun, incredibly fun actually!” Another said that “It was the best time ever!” We are so pleased to continue to celebrate Bobcat Country in a number ways, and this Grade 8 Trackmeet is a key part of introducing our most junior students into the Brookswood Secondary community!
IN THE CLASSROOM
Some fun and exciting stuff happening around BSS this week! We’ve got some great pictures of student learning–including a writing workshop in Ms. McGowen’s class in preparation for their upcoming crime/mystery fiction unit! Ms. Tressel’s class sported some old-timey moustaches for a mock confederation conference. Mr. Costopoulos’ class dug deep into their routes and made a map of where everyone in their class originated from! Grade 8 woodwork made some neat things, we had a blanket presentation in Mrs. Neufeld’s class, and the Equestrian program had a chance to meet the #1 Olympic groomer this week.
Grad cruise is the first of many Grade 12 events that we plan at Brookswood Secondary. As an official “kick-off” to their grad year, we had approx. 170 students join us on a beautiful harbour cruise in Vancouver. The weather was absolutely perfect, with an amazing sunset and even a harvest moon above the cityscape. This year we treated grads to pizza, cupcakes and a candy bar! They danced the night away, and made many lasting memories.
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY
This past Thursday was mental health awareness day. Our junior leadership students made sure to promote the importance of supporting mental health awareness by encouraging students to wear green (the official mental health colour) and they also hosted a delicious bake sale at lunch to raise funds for local mental health initiatives. At Brookswood, we want all of our students to know that they are supported in their mental health journey, and offer a number of services for students who are struggling or just have questions. BSS has a great Student Wellness section on our website for students looking for apps, resources or more support.
Grade 11 and 12 students from both Brookswood and Langley Fundamental participated in an exciting post-secondary informational afternoon this past Monday. We had a number of institutions here giving presentations to our students, and a walk-through fair at the end of the day for students get more information, talk to representatives and overall have a better understanding of their future options when it comes to post secondary. A big thanks to the Counselling and Careers departments, as well as our many student volunteers.
As a way to meet certain needs of our school and classrooms, Brookswood has created a “school needs” area on its website (Thanks to our lead parent volunteer on this–Carmen Kimm!). The purpose of this new webpage is to make it know to the external Brookswood community certain needs that could possibly be filled by items that may or may not be taking up extra space in attics, basements and sheds. Please periodically check the needs page (CLICK HERE) to see if you have anything we need.
