Can you believe that we are already into October? It has arrived quickly, and with so much happening around Brookswood already this fall, it is hardly surprising how fast time has flown! This week we had some Grads visit CUE BC to learn about post secondary opportunities, and coming this week we are hosting our own post secondary information afternoon!
MEET THE TEACHER
Thank you to everyone who came out to this year’s Meet the Teacher event this past Thursday! Hopefully you were able to connect with your student’s teachers, and meet some of the many new faces we have around Brookswood this year. Any feedback on this new format is appreciated–we tried something a little bit different this year, and would like to hear feedback. If you would like more one-on-one time with specific teachers, look for the upcoming parent-teacher interviews in November.
IN THE CLASSROOM
We saw a lot of fun this past week at Brookswood, from make-up tutorials in Drama to reading the classics in English. Check out our gallery for more great pictures!
LETTER TO PARENTS
Please take a moment to read this letter from the School District regarding September start-up and important information regarding classrooms, teachers and schools. Letter to Parents – School Startup 2017 Sep28
ORANGE SHIRT DAY
This past Friday, September 29th, Brookswood participated in Orange Shirt Day: “Every Child Matters.” As a part of our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, Brookswood staff and students celebrated by creating a large display in our front foyer, donning our orange shirts and having meaningful conversations in classrooms from grades 8 through 12. For more information about Orange Shirt Day, click HERE.
Brookswood continues to offer a number of opportunities for students to get involved outside of the classroom. Starting this coming week, the Brookswood Science Club and Robotics Club will be open for students to try out!
All grade 8-10 students interested in exploring hands-on science are invited to join the AmazNG Science Club, which meets this Wednesday from 3:15-4:30pm in Room 230. This week, the club will be revisiting Mr. Ng’s all-time favourite slime-recipe!
Sign up to participate on Mr.Ng’s sandwich board outside his classroom starting Monday morning. First 25 students between Grade 8-10 will get to bring home their very own bag of slime!
Grade 11’s and 12’s: Want to join in the fun as a peer leader and gain volunteer hours towards graduation? See Mr. Ng to learn how you can participate!
Do you like to build things? Are you interested in robotics? Even if you are just a little bit curious come and visit a Robotics show and tell on Tuesday, October 3rd at lunch in the library.
Club meetings will be Thursday from 3 to 4:30 starting with a shorter introductory meeting on Thursday October 5th in room 222.
As a way to meet certain needs of our school and classrooms, Brookswood has created a “school needs” area on its website (Thanks to our lead parent volunteer on this–Carmen Kimm!). The purpose of this new webpage is to make it know to the external Brookswood community certain needs that could possibly be filled by items that may or may not be taking up extra space in attics, basements and sheds. Please periodically check the needs page (CLICK HERE) to see if you have anything we need.
This week Grad’s have a lot going on! On Monday, October 2nd, we will be hosting a Post-Secondary Information (PSI) Day at Brookswood, where grade 12s can investigate a variety of different post-secondary opportunities available to them. The event will take place from 12:30-3:00. On Thursday, October 5th, we will embark on our Annual Grad Cruise. All forms and payments were due last week, and bus lists have been finalized. They will be posted outside the office this week. Students MUST be at the school at 4:00 to board the busses to the boat–NO OTHER TRANSPORTATION IS ALLOWED.
This past week two of Brookswood’s students (one from the Equestrian Academy, one from regular stream) made some amazing advances in the Equestrian world! Hayley Mercer and Ashley Arnoldt both qualified for the Canadian National Equitation Finals at the Royal Fair in Toronto. Only 16 competitors from Canada qualify to participate in this event, so CONGRATULATIONS and BEST OF LUCK to Hayley and Ashley!
